Article:

For those of you that do not know, Clinique is a manufacturer of skincare, cosmetics, toiletries and fragrances, owned by the Estée Lauder Corporation. It is established in August 1968 and unlike most cosmetic companies, it aims to meet individual skin care needs.

The article speaks about Clinique having its largest opening in 40 years at famed Selfridges London, which marks a significant breakthrough for the company. This breakthrough does not happen merely by chance; it is due to the hard work of employees and especially the management board. The Company functioned not by depending on just one leader but a group( the management board and the rest of the employees) so as to combat Groupthink. Groupthink occurs when the group especially the leader, became overconfident and starts making poor decisions. Why bother to combat Groupthink? Groupthink promotes comfort, complacency and insular thinking. Therefore if Groupthink occurs, it will obstruct the growth of the Company and Clinique will soon lose its title as one of the main cosmetic brands in the world.

Clinique has always focus on experimenting and coming up with new products that suit individual needs. Many believed that it is because of such an approach that makes Clinique stay as one of the main cosmetic brands in the world. However, when we think of the effective approach that Clinique uses, how can we forget the group of people behind the success of the company?

In 1969, the Company, (the Empire of Estée Lauder with Clinique in its structure) was launched into the international market. The Company opened its first store overseas in Great Britain. Later on, the Company took hold of the market gradually, step by step and in 1970 Clinique became the first in the market to provide cosmetic means for protection of skin against UV rays, in 1971 glossing lipstick Black Honey Almost Lipstick was at the top record levels, in 1976 the Company launches its first line of cosmetics for men.

However, Clinique did not stop its scientific investigations and collaboration with chief specialists in dermatology to come up with new improved product that caters to individual skin care needs. Through all these forty years, the Company has never ceased its intensive research and verification of its products because selling products that best cater to individual skin care needs has become the common goal of the group of employees of Clinique. Thus, Clinique was first among the cosmetics manufacturers to be invited to the American Dermatology Conference and since that time it is the respected habitué at them. In 1986 the Company was the first cosmetics company to be invited and take party in the Session of the Academy of Ophthalmology. Clinique collaborates with Weill Cornell Medical Center in joint investigations and educational programs concerning issues of skin health and creation of Clinique Center of Health Skin.

Yes! i agree that Groupthink is extremely disastrous for every individual's group/clique and even more so, for big enterprises.

A company works as a team,as a big family , cooperating together towards a common goal. Not just for the selfish benefits of one, with power.

Indeed, most companies want to promote a culture of being able to look beyond self and instead, for the organization to work as a team for the betterment of the company. However, that is usually only seen on the surface. As most people would still only consider they personal needs and thus, this is part why the recent economic crisis was so bad.

I think that it is very difficult to avoid groupthink especially as the organization grow bigger. When an organization grows bigger, the organization will grow to depend on the decision of one dominant leader more and more because it is much easier and it is very difficult to gather everyone's opinion. As this goes on, the leader may think that the success of the organization is all because of him and he may become too overconfident.

The most important thing in a team is teamwork. Everyone in the team should participate in it. Democratic leadership is sometimes better than authoritative leadership.

I think that as an organization grows bigger, groupthink is unavoidable. This is because it is harder to gather everyone's opinion, the bigger the organization is. So I guess if Clinique wants to see a progressive growth of the company, it has got to take up measures to prevent groupthink from setting in.

Groupthink is inevitable when a company is big as it is difficult to accomodate everyone's idea/opinion. Nevertheless, everyone should try to be co-operative so that company's goal will be acheived and there will be teamwork among everyone.

Actually, I do not have very good impression of Clinique products although I know that their products are targeted at meeting individual skin care needs. One area that I feel they can improve on is really their marketing skills. They should make their advertisements more appealing to the mass. For instance, they can get celebrities to endorse for their products. I think this is important because it is not just groupthink that will hinder the success of Clinique. There are so many other factors that Clinique should pay attention to.

I don't think that there is anything wrong with agreeing to the views of a capable leader. In fact, I think if there are too many different opinions constantly being voiced out, won't it lead to disunity in the group?

Yes...based on this article...it is therefore important to ensure that groupthink that not occur in a company which may stifle plausible ideas that a group member may have but may not be ABLE to voice out due to the immense pressure coming from the unanimous response of the other group members. The leader may not always be right in every case despite his or her capacity of being the most experienced person in the group. Other group members may have innovative ideas and skills that may enhance and contribute to the overall effectiveness of a certain project or concept. This will thus contribute to the continued success of the company on the whole as witness from the article written above. This will also ensure that each group member has a part to play in contributing to the success of the company.

    @ Joelle
I don't agree that when people voice out their different opinion will lead to disunity. In fact I think that when people voice out what they are truly thinking, everyone in the group will have a better understanding of each other. This will in turn promote unity. After all, generally, when people do not voice out their opinions, they will still find a way to voice it out e.g. through gossips. In this case, the situation will be worse and it will be more likely for disunity to take place. Furthermore, with the various different opinion, the group will have more option in solving a problem or a wider view of the entire situation.
