1st Entry-Chicken-a-la-carte???
This is an award winning short film by Ferdinand Dimadura which talks about hunger and poverty brought about by Globalization. This short film is posted on Youtube which received more than 230,000 hits and more than 400 comments. Out of these 400 over comments, many commented that they were very touched by the video and they actually teared as they were watching it. Many even said that they will never waste food again.
This is very remarkable as this video is filmed in an impoverished area in Philippines, and most of the people who commented on the video are not even from Philippines. They have never experienced such poverty and hunger, and yet they were so moved by what they saw in this six minutes video that they would want to make a commitment or rather a change in their lives(not to waste food anymore). This confirms the belief of the social constructionist who holds the perspective that, "Most of what we know and believe about the world comes to us through communication rather than through direct experience". The communication here does not simply refer to face to face communication, it also refer to communication through telephone, mass media.etc.
If what we know comes only through a direct experience such as a face to face conversation, then our awareness of the world around us will be too limited. For many of us that has never experienced extreme poverty and hunger, we will never fully understand how horrible it is to have to eat from leftovers.
I believed that many of us must have heard or been told by someone that we should not waste food, but how many of us actually listened to that comment? If such comment to persuade us not to waste food carry enough impact, then there will not be incidents such as 6.7 million tonnes of food that is thrown away by households in UK each year. But look at these people featured in the video, though they are eating from leftovers, they were still so happy and thankful that they even give thanks to their god before their meals. How can anyone not be moved at the sight of this?
While it is important for us to keep on progressing in this fast paced world and learn how to express our individual self, let us not be overly individualistic that we forgot to be concerned about the less fortunate ones in our society.

I am not exaggerating, but this is the best blog post I've seen out of the numerous blogs I visited for COM 101 people.
How can people still waste food after seeing such a touching video? Celine has provided us what I can consider the deepest insight to how poverty is affecting other parts of the world.
Singapore is a paradise.

I must say that after watching this video I am very touched by how grateful and happy these people are to have things many of things consider junk. Indeed, we may never be able to experience having to eat someone else's leftover or even hunger, but this video certainly gives us much to think about our attitude towards our lives and the many luxuries we enjoy.

Gosh! It nearly moved me to tears!
This video strucked us with the thought that we are indeed very fortunate to be able to enjoy what we could. We seriously have to learn to be satisfied with what we have and not take things for granted. The part where they thank God for the food, the waste food, we ought to be guilty for that.

This is really heartbreaking.
Director Dimadura deserves to win it.
I think it is good how you linked timeless issues like Poverty and Hunger with theories of Communication. I
ndeed, globalisation has trivalised human contact. More needs to be done to raise awareness of the underprivileged, beyond word of mouth or books. Videos are a very good way of bringing to us these realities the written word cannot.
I hope it garnered some response from charities or authorities.

Yeah...I suppose better food distribution techniques and strategies are needed. There needs to be more humanitarian aid for these hunger-stricken people. There is massive food wastage occurring in so many areas on Earth and the excess food can be better made used of by donating them to charitable organisations. However, there are always economics and political agendas involved in everything...God Bless the situation and hopefully it things will get better! We must not be self-centered in our own pursuits as nothing in life ever truely belongs to a person, but to God! Amen! Speaking from a christian point of view...:)

OMG . this is indeed a touching story and worth people to ponder about what are they doing to their food daily!
This video is indeed worth being prized. It has used simple everyday occurence, and yet a significant issue as the subject. Filming it in the most realistic manner.
May the Lord bless them!

I wouldn't say I was move to tears...but this just goes to show that why we should not waste food and/or choose and pick what to eat from our meals that we ordered and be thankful for what we have as we need not eat another man's leftovers.

I am really very touched by the video. I think many times maybe we are not put in the situation so it's hard for us to understand what others are going through. It is by watching video like this that we are reminded of those around us who are less fortunate than us.

I wish I could be there to help them like getting them food, rather than sitting here, feeling sad for them. But with me alone, it is impossible to feed so many who are hungry. I think that this video is a great tool to communicate to the mass and appeal to them to land a helping hand to these poor and needy people.
